How to Choose an Injection Molding Supplier (10-Point Checklist)

Choosing an injection molding supplier is a procurement decision with engineering consequences. The cheapest quote can cost you months in re-tooling; the most expensive one can be a reseller with no mold shop. A structured 10-point checklist — the same one we ask buyers to run on us — separates real factories from middlemen and sets up the program for success before the first shot.

The 10-Point Supplier Checklist

1. Mold making in-house — who fixes the tool when it wears or the gate needs moving? No mold shop means vendor negotiations mid-program. 2. Machine park — what tonnage range, and are the machines closed-loop? A 40-100T Sodick fleet covers most parts; closed-loop control holds process consistency. 3. Certifications — IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 13485 for medical, ISO 9001 baseline. 4. DFM discipline — does the quote include design-for-manufacturing feedback, or is it a price with no engineering? 5. Material range — can they run commodity and engineering resins (ABS, PP, PC, nylon, PBT, PPS, PEEK, TPU, LSR), and do they actually have the high-temperature capability? 6. Inspection — CMM on site, first-article reports, SPC on critical features. 7. Secondary operations — insert molding, overmolding, two-shot, welding, printing, plating in-house. 8. Communication — do you get a named engineer, and do they answer in hours or weeks? 9. Lead times — what is the honest number for your volume? 10. References and case studies — do comparable programs exist with documentation?

The checklist works in both directions. We ask buyers for the same clarity: complete drawings, real volume forecasts and agreed inspection levels — because a supplier cannot quote honestly against an incomplete specification. Red Flags That Should Kill a Supplier

Run from these: a quote with no DFM comments and no cavity plan (it is a reseller number); a supplier who cannot show the steel grade and heat treatment for your tool; a supplier who quotes tight tolerances on everything (padding or planning to fail); a supplier with no inspection equipment; and a supplier whose quality certs cannot be verified. Conversely, trust signals: the supplier asks about your volume curve, your tolerance priorities and your end application — questions that only a factory with process responsibility would ask.

Two more signals worth adding to the checklist. First, ask how the supplier handles changes: a change-order policy that routes through engineering with cost and schedule impact stated up front is the sign of a mature operation; a policy that absorbs changes silently is how budgets blow up later. Second, ask about capacity: the machine list shows what the factory owns, but the loading shows what they can actually deliver — a supplier at 110% capacity will miss your dates no matter how good the quote was. A serious supplier tells you honestly when they are full and refers you to a backup rather than taking the order and failing it.
