THE REAL DECISION

Small-Batch Sourcing, Done Right vs. Done Wrong

Low-volume buyers usually hit one of two paths. The wrong one costs months and doubles the budget; the right one gets real production parts in your hand in weeks. Here is what separates them.

The wrong path: tooling and molding as two vendors

The mold builder ships a tool, the molder runs it, and every issue becomes a blame war — gate position, shrinkage compensation, cooling layout, ejector marks. Each round-trip costs weeks of email chains, and the tool is often reworked to fit a machine it was never designed for.

The wrong path: the cheapest mold

A low-ball quote usually means skipped mold-flow analysis, unverified steel and rushed trials. The tool wears out mid-program, cycles run long, and the apparent savings are consumed by rework and downtime — a short-life mold is the most expensive mold you can buy.

Choose Your Mold: Process, Volume and Precision

Four mold families cover the range from first validation shots to million-cycle production — pick the one that matches your program.

Two-Plate & Three-Plate Molds

The workhorse of injection tooling — simple parting and low cost for most parts; a runner plate adds multi-drop gating when you need it.

  • Simple parting, fast cycles
  • Low tooling cost
  • Multi-drop gating option

Rapid & Bridge Tooling

Aluminum or soft-steel molds for 100–10,000 cycles — validation, pilot runs and bridge production in real engineering material.

  • Builds in days, not months
  • 100–10,000 cycle life
  • Scales into bridge production

Hardened Production Tooling

P20/718 or H13 steel engineered for 100k–1M+ cycles — multi-cavity and family layouts for long-running programs.

  • 25–30 day delivery
  • 100k–1M+ cycle life
  • Multi-cavity & family layouts

Two-Shot, Insert & Hot Runner

Two materials in one cycle, metal inserts or TPE overmold, and hot-runner layouts that eliminate cold-runner scrap for engineering resins.

  • Two-shot / multi-shot molding
  • Insert & overmold tooling
  • Hot runner systems

Mold Lead Time and Cost: What the Numbers Really Are

Cycle and cost-share figures are public industry values; program lead times are our own standard commitments.

Simple / small mold1–2 weeks from approved DFM
Medium-complexity mold2–4 weeks
Complex or large mold8+ weeks (large tools can run 3+ months)
Rapid toolingFrom 7 days on urgent programs
Mold steel share of total cost≈20–30% (simple molds near 20%, complex molds above 30%)

Automotive

IATF 16949-controlled tooling for interior, exterior and under-hood components, with automotive-grade molds shipped in 45 days.

Medical & Healthcare

Corrosion-resistant steels like S136 and tight tolerance control for device housings, consumables and transparent parts.

Consumer Electronics

Cosmetic-grade cavities, texture and hot-runner layouts for visible housings, wearables and earbuds.

Home Appliances & Power Tools

Long-running hardened tooling that holds dimensional stability across high-cycle appliance and power-tool programs.

Industrial & Machinery

Precision inserts and wear-resistant tooling for valves, connectors, gears and machine components.

Product Launches & Pilot Runs

Rapid tooling for market testing and pilot batches — real production material, with the same tool upgradeable into production.

FAQ

Mold Making Service — FAQ

Which mold types do you build?

Injection molds — two-plate, three-plate, hot-runner, two-shot and insert tooling — plus die-casting molds; stamping, forging, extrusion and blow molds are outside our tool-shop scope.

How long does mold making take?

Simple small molds 1–2 weeks, medium complexity 2–4 weeks, complex and large molds 8+ weeks; rapid tooling can ship in as little as 7 days.

Which steel gives the best value?

P20 for medium and small molds with general precision; 718 when toughness, hardenability and size push requirements up; H13 for die-casting work.

What tolerance can precision molds hold?

Medical-grade programs are controlled to ±0.005 mm or tighter under IATF 16949-level process control; aerospace-class molds are held at micron level.

Do you maintain the mold after delivery?

Yes — maintenance and care guidance is included with every mold; for programs molded with us the tooling stays on file, reorder-ready.

HOW IT WORKS

From Inquiry to Delivery

1

DFM & Mold Design

Part geometry review, gate and runner layout, cooling-circuit design and mold-flow analysis before any steel is cut. DFM is the cheapest revision you will ever make.

2

Materials Preparation

Mold steel ordered and verified per program class — P20/718 pre-hardened for standard production, H13 or S7 for high-pressure or die-casting work.

3

CNC Machining

3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling of cores, cavities and inserts; 5-axis cuts deep, angled features that 3-axis would need multiple setups for.

4

Sinker EDM Machining

Sinker EDM burns sharp internal corners, square pockets and deep ribs that no cutter can reach; electrodes are machined on-site for tight control.

5

Wire-Cut EDM

Wire EDM cuts through-hardened inserts, core pins and ejector profiles on our on-site wire-cut machines.

6

Assembly & Fitting

Mold-base assembly, core fitting, clearance and alignment checks — the stage where fit-up errors show up before any plastic is shot.

7

Polishing & Surface Finish

Cavity polishing to SPI grades A1–D3 and texturing or etching for cosmetic surfaces, finished to your surface spec.

8

Trial & Approval

Trial shots on our presses, dimensional verification and approval samples before the mold is released to production.
