What Soft Tooling Is — and When It Wins
Soft tooling is a production-grade injection mold made from machined aluminum or pre-hardened steel instead of hardened tool steel. Because the cavity is cut directly on CNC (and finished with wire EDM where needed), a soft tool can be built in days rather than months. Parts come off the same kind of press as production parts, so you get real molded geometry, real material properties and real surface finish — not a 3D-printed approximation.
It wins in three situations: when volume is unproven (you want to sell before you tool), when the design is still moving (changes are cheap on a soft tool), and when you need bridge parts while a hardened tool is being built. It loses when the program is already locked: at very high volumes the mold life and cycle economics of a hardened tool pay for themselves. For low-volume production, our soft tools typically run 7–12 days from DFM to first articles, and we keep rapid tooling and low-volume production as separate services for projects that need even faster turns.
Aluminum vs. Pre-Hardened Steel
- Aluminum (7075/6061): fastest to cut, excellent thermal conductivity for shorter cycles, best value for 100–5,000 part programs and design iterations.
- Pre-hardened steel (P20/738): more wear-resistant and dimensionally stable, the right bridge between soft and production tooling for longer runs.
- Same tooling discipline: either way the mold is designed in-house, cut in our own shop, tried and measured before the first production shot.
- Insert-ready: vertical press capacity (45–120 T) means soft tools can also carry metal inserts from our 20 Aida presses for insert-molded prototypes.
Every soft tool is built with production in mind: standard mold bases, proper ejection, and cooling channels laid out so the tool can graduate to a hardened cavity without redesigning the part. That is the difference between a soft tool and a prototype tool — the geometry, gating and ejection strategy already match production.

Because our tool shop is in-house — CNC, wire EDM and tryout on the same floor as molding — soft tooling lead times run 7–12 days, and tooling NRE is a fraction of a hardened-steel program. Cost scales with cavity count, material and complexity, and we quote it line-by-line after DFM.
