Rapid Tooling for Prototypes & Bridge Production

Rapid tooling compresses the path from CAD to molded parts from months to days — first molded parts in 7–12 days, soft tooling in about a week. We deliver aluminum molds on 7–12 day rapid-tooling tracks, run them on our presses in your production resin, and hand you a DFM-validated program ready to scale into hardened-steel production.

THE REAL DECISION

Small-Batch Sourcing, Done Right vs. Done Wrong

Low-volume buyers usually hit one of two paths. The wrong one costs months and doubles the budget; the right one gets real production parts in your hand in weeks. Here is what separates them.

The wrong path: waiting 6–8 weeks for full hardened-steel tooling

A hardened multi-cavity mold takes 6–8 weeks before the first shot — and for a product launch, funding deadline or market validation, that window can cost you the opportunity. If feedback forces a design change, a $20,000–$100,000 steel tool is written off before it ever pays back.

The wrong path: soft-mold life misjudged

Soft tooling looks cheap until you check the cycle rating — 3D-printed tools last 50–300 cycles and soft-steel prototypes 100–500. Ordering 5,000 parts on a 500-cycle tool means the mold fails mid-run and the whole batch stops for a rebuild.

WHAT WE OFFER

The Route That Fits Your Order

Rapid Tooling Options

Pick the tool that matches your stage — prototype, bridge, or pre-production.

Aluminum & Soft Tooling

Machined aluminum molds that deliver real molded parts in days — the bridge between prototype and hardened-steel production.

  • 5–15 day turn
  • Low NRE
  • Same resin as production
  • Design iteration friendly

Prototype & Bridge Tooling

Tooling sized for pilot lots and market validation before capital commitment.

  • 10k–100k shot life
  • DFM locked early
  • Fast first-article
  • Reorder-ready

Production Tooling Transition

When volume justifies it, we convert the program to hardened-steel multi-cavity tooling on the same process window.

  • Seamless resin switch
  • Cavity multiplication
  • SPC on every cavity
  • Locked parameters

Cost and Lead Time: Where Rapid Tooling Wins

Where rapid tooling wins on cost and speed — and the one watch-out to design around.

Mold cost vs production tooling60–80% lower
Lead time5–28 days vs 8–16 weeks for hardened steel
MOLDITQUICK low-volume programFirst molded parts in 7–12 days
Precision±0.02 mm with CMM verification
Pricing vs market15–20% savings on identical scope through DFM before cutting
Watch outInjection pressure above 80 MPa cuts aluminum mold life by 20–30%
First-article samplesIncluded with the mold trial — 5–10 test shots plus a report on dimensions, defects and parameter adjustments.
Minimum orderFrom about 100 parts — real molded parts in your resin, not just a mold sitting on a shelf.
Mold modificationsGate, cooling and wall-thickness changes are machined into aluminum in days; steel molds need weeks and new heat treatment.

Mold Life by Material and Resin

How many cycles each mold type delivers, and which resins each is built for.

Six Things a Rapid Mold Verifies Before You Commit

What a rapid mold proves before you commit capital to production tooling.

Structural design rationality — the part survives real molding pressure without warp, sink or short shots.

Part strength and functional performance in the production resin, not a stand-in material.

Production tooling structure — gates, ejection and cooling are proven early, so the hardened tool starts life debugged.

Selected material performance in the actual process window — shrink, warpage and cycle behavior.

Mass-production stability — cycle time and yield data are captured before you commit capital.

Market response — real molded parts for internal testing, crowdfunding campaigns and early sales.

FAQ

Rapid Tooling for Prototypes & Bridge Production — FAQ

Which files do you accept?

STEP (best), IGES and SolidWorks; 2D PNG/JPG drawings are not enough for mold construction.

How accurate are rapid molds?

Standard precision ±0.05 mm for most ABS/PC parts; high precision ±0.02 mm for steel molds with EDM finish.

Can you handle undercuts and thin walls?

Yes — side sliders for undercuts (about 15% extra tool cost), walls down to 0.5 mm, mirror finish to Ra 0.8 µm.

Do you ship globally?

Yes — 50+ countries via DHL/FedEx; Asia 1–3 days, Europe/USA 3–5 days, customs help included.

How do you verify mold accuracy?

CMM inspection plus 5 test shots; 98% of rapid molds pass ISO 2768 medium tolerance.

What is the difference between rapid tooling and prototype tooling?

Rapid tooling is a family — prototype, bridge and soft tooling — with lives from 100 to 10,000+ cycles; prototype tooling sits at the short-life end for a handful of test parts.

How many test shots do you run?

5–10 shots on the first trial, more when the part needs iteration; every round is documented with photos and measurements.

What resins can rapid molds run?

ABS, PC, PC/ABS, PP, PA, POM, PMMA, PBT, PETG and more — high-temperature or glass-filled grades are quoted case by case.

HOW IT WORKS

From Inquiry to Delivery

1

3D Upload & DFM Review

Upload STEP or IGES; a DFM report lands within 48 hours flagging uneven walls, missing draft and gate placement before any steel is cut.

2

Mold Design & CNC/EDM Machining

Core and cavity machined in 3–7 days on 5-axis CNC and EDM at ±0.03 mm; cooling channels are laid out for cycle time and uniform shrink.

3

Polishing & Assembly

Mirror or textured finish applied to the cavity, the mold assembled, and critical dimensions CMM-checked to ≤0.02 mm before trial.

4

Trial Molding & Report

5–10 test shots on our presses; you receive a trial report with defect analysis, parameter adjustments and the improvement plan.
